The music came after the experience.
JRH did not arrive at music by the usual road.
Long before releasing his first album, James Richard Hicks had already spent more than three decades building businesses, raising three children, taking risks, weathering change, and learning how quickly an ordinary moment can become a permanent memory.
In 1993, he started his first healthcare business in borrowed space inside his parents' garage. That modest beginning grew into a career building and leading companies across several areas of healthcare.
That history matters for one reason: the music came after the experience.
JRH did not have to invent a life before he had something to write about. He had already lived one.
The spark that became Where You Can Breathe arrived unexpectedly while Hicks was watching Elvis Presley's legendary 1968 Comeback Special. He was struck by the presence, honesty, and power of someone simply stepping forward and telling the truth through music.
Something opened.
What began as a moment of inspiration became an album.

Hicks plays saxophone and piano, but storytelling is the instrument at the center of JRH.
He writes songs the way people remember important nights—in images and details.
Brown eyes and tattoos. A look held across a crowded room. Something almost said. A woman who changes the atmosphere simply by walking into it. The unexpected person who makes the world feel different, even if only for a little while.
These stories make room for emotion without forcing every feeling into a promise or manufacturing a perfect ending. JRH does not chase, claim, or pretend to know what another person feels.
